ABOYNE Ontario - November 15, 2013 – The front lawn of the Wellington County Museum and Archives has 317 memorial plaques honouring soldiers and nurses who perished in the First World War. This touching tribute will be on display for the entire month of November.
The County has also produced a short video to honour the fallen, and encourage the public to visit the “Far from Home: A Soldier’s Life at the Front, 1914-1918,” exhibit. This major gallery installation features a life-size trench and takes an in-depth look at the young soldiers and nurses who served in World War I. Descendants of Wellington County soldiers were used as models for the mannequins and painting in the gallery. Historical photos and music accompany the powerful one minute video.
“It’s the hope of the Wellington County Museum and Archives that this video and these exhibits will help people understand the importance of remembering the past,” said Janice Hindley, Museum Administrator. “Each marker tells a story, and we must never forget the sacrifices these young men and women made.”
The video was shot by Ironcloud Productions of Hillsburgh and produced by the County Communications team.
“This video was extremely emotional to make,” commented Andrea Ravensdale, County Communications Manager. “Once we started filming, editing and adding in actual pictures of the fallen, it became much more than a project. Everyone who worked on the video was committed to ensuring historical accuracy and remembering those who perished in a respectful way.”
“We Will Remember You,” is available on the County’s website, via its YouTube channel. “Far from Home: A Soldier’s Life at the Front, 1914-1918,” is a permanent exhibit at the Wellington County Museum and Archives.
